How to Become a Video Choreographer

Overview
Music videos are filled with dancers seemingly moving to the rhythm of the song playing in the background. These professional performers are actually timing the movements of the dance to match the script written by the video choreographer. A choreographer is someone who designs dances. A video choreographer is the elite in her field. She is an expert in the art of dance and designs each step in her own style. Becoming a video choreographer requires years of practice as a dancer, a bit of extra schooling, a competitive spirit and a portfolio of previous dance routine designs.

Step 1
Begin taking dance lessons. Start with ballet or tap dancing to gain a solid foundation in classical dance. The younger you start your training the better your chance for success.

Step 2
Choose a dance path. Jazz, ethnic and hip hop are just a few of the specialty dance lines you can follow. Pick one and learn as much about that style as you can with private instructors, self study and formal training in a dance school.

Step 3
Begin auditioning for professional dance jobs. Once again, the earlier you enter the field the better your chances for success as a dancer. Waiting until you are in your 20s for your first audition will put you far behind many of your colleagues.

Step 4
Stay in shape and abstain from any unhealthy activities. Practice daily both alone and in a formal setting. Show up early for every practice and performance. Maintain a professional, respectful demeanor when dealing with other dancers, producers, choreographers and directors.

Step 5
Attend college classes in search of a degree. A bachelor’s degree or higher, in dance or performing arts, will catapult you to the head of the pack when moving into the teaching and choreography fields.

Step 6
Teach dance classes to supplement your income as a dancer. This gives you a more stable schedule which allows you to study and perfect your choreography style.

Step 7
Watch videos and live performances of dance routines which follow your style. Take notes about every facet of how a dance is composed. Review your notes and rewrite the steps in a way that you think better fits that song.

Step 8
Listen to music and create fresh choreography drawing from your own education and experience. Give your choreography a personality that is linked directly to you.

Step 9
Get a job as a choreographer with dance schools, art programs or local theater troupes. Gain experience and confidence while creating a professional brand you can use as a resume. Hire a videographer to film performances you have choreographed. Keep these recordings for use as a portfolio.

Step 10
Contact music companies and artists who produce music within your genre. Announce your availability as a choreographer and apply for open positions on video shoots. Be professional, be persistent and stay true to your style in order to succeed as a choreographer.
