How To Know When Your Server Needs More RAM

When running a business, there’s no time for lagging servers. You rely on the server to keep up and keep track of everything. Unfortunately, as business grows and more activity happens with the server, memory will eventually run low. It’s frustrating but thankfully a simple fix. Let’s look at what it is and how to know when your server needs more RAM.

What Is RAM?

The random access memory (RAM) in your server stores all of the data and codes. When using your computer, the RAM reads and writes data items within the computer, no matter where they’re located. In other words, nothing is getting done quickly and correctly in the server without enough RAM. Here are six signs your server needs more RAM:

  • Restart: often, when working away on the computer, it suddenly shuts down, then restarts without warning.
  • Freezing: random freezing while working, such as when the screen freezes up or processes freeze, causing long pauses and wait times.
  • Delayed typing: typing along, only to see the words typed are showing up as you’re already on the next sentence.
  • Warnings: Our server warns us the memory is depleting. This usually happens when we try to download software and the system lets us know there simply isn’t room.
  • No response: programs and apps have stopped responding.
  • Blank screen: some call it the screen of death, and rightfully so. If you’re looking at a bright blue screen with nothing on it, or a blue screen with a lot of impossible to understand coding, it’s probably a RAM issue.

Now What?

Now we know what to look for to understand if memory is running low on the server. But what should a business do when these frustrating signs appear? For starters, call IT rather than trying to fix the issue yourself. They’ll assess the situation with these two steps:

  1. Run a scan for malicious software.
  2. Disable programs and software not in use to create more room.

Finally, if those two options don’t resolve the RAM issue, it may be necessary to add additional memory to the server. RAM sticks are easily inserted into the motherboard of the server and instantly increase the RAM.

The server is key in a well-run business. As it slows, so do processes and necessary tasks which need accomplishing each day for the company’s success. Pay attention to the signs we covered and be sure to resolve low RAM issues before they have a larger negative effect.
