Starting a new business is a great challenge to set yourself but many entrepreneurs assume that it will be a lot easier than it is. They assume that because they know what they want their business to do, achieving a fully functioning and solvent business won’t take very long at all.
So what are the main mistakes these entrepreneurs make that you want to avoid?
Failing to Plan Properly
One of the first and most common ways startups go wrong is failing to plan properly. Having an idea is a great start but it is not the foundation on which you need to build your business. You need to think about where you are going to get funding from, how much you will need to invest before you will see a return and what your options are if you run out of money. You also need to think about sensible pricing, what your monthly overheads are and how much profit you want to make.
The more you plan, the easier it will be to run your business once it is set up. Marketing and advertising might seem like frills on top, but they are also a huge part of your planning process since this is the only way you are going to be able to attract any customers. Think about as many different possibilities as you can before you begin and you won’t get caught out.
Forgetting to Outsource
Of course, the other problem that entrepreneurs run into is the fact that they are trying to do too much by themselves. You aren’t a superhero (sadly) and as much as you might think you can happily work 18 hour days, you really, really can’t keep that up.
If you aren’t ready to hire permanent staff just yet, take on freelancers to pick up some slack. They will be able to work for you on a project basis and provide all kinds of specialist services to make life easier. In fact, why don’t you outsource some parts of your business? Trying to Do Too Much At Once
If the first two problems don’t get you then this one certainly might. Many businesses offer a wide range of products and services that cover everything their customers could need. But – and this is a big but – you are only just starting out and they are well established. When Amazon first began, it was basically an online bookstore. It wasn’t until later that other products were sold on its platform.
When you are starting a new business, you should always get the basics right first and then think about adding more product lines or services later on when you are ready. If you try to do too many things at once your brand and marketing are likely to get diluted and confused as a result. Take it slow; global businesses aren’t born overnight.
